Covid related issues

Not proud of the amount of plastics we have in the house again since Covid started.
The bulk sections were closed for a while and we only got grocery delivery to our door step that created definitely more trash. In addition we got lots of paper bags which we gave to the preschool for art bags.
It is really harder to stay true to all the ideas of the last years.
Take away containers. Single bags. The hardest was to buy single use plastic container anywhere were food would be shared (school and sports events).
We still get fruit and vegetable delivery every now and then which feels so wholesome and wonderful.

I have a bunch of these for camping and felt really bad about tossing them and buying new. They just feel like they need to be refilled.

I just watched a youtube video and now consider ordering the adapter. So excited to try this.

Feeling a bit of a zero waste fatigue. It feels like a real privilege to do the right thing very often. From spending time to research options, going to different stores, filling own containers, often not knowing how much it will cost, that is a huge barrier to make this movement more accessible for all. We definitely spend about 20-30% more trying to do zero waste. Refilling a shampoo or detergent and paying 3-10x what it originally cost just doesn't feel that great - and I only did it once. There are just a few bulk items that seem to be consistently cheaper as the packaged, like oatmeal, flour, legumes, spices.

Trying to avoid the convenient cooking spray we usually bought, we bought a refillable glass spray we fill with our oil we refill from bulk at PCC.

REfilled Shampoo and Body Wash

Brought both empty containers to PCC for a refill. I am a bit sensitive to intense scents, so I went with their baby wash. I smells very mild and calming. The shampoo works great, was just a bit hard to pump from their bulk container. I tried to do a pint each to try it out. So far I like it.

I refilled the body wash once before with a Grapefruit body wash from Basic but paid over $20. I have a $10 price sensitivity for a body wash. The Grapefruit one smelled really nice and made me happy, but the price tag just felt very steep.

My Bulk Buying system

I'm bringing a bunch of fabric bags and some mason jars to bulk sections. Oatmeal paper tube gets filled up again with oatmeal. They all have their tar weight written on with sharpie. I fill them and at the cash register I tell them the code when they pick up the item. I keep one sheet, usually a paper bag, with all the codes, so it goes fairly quickly.
