South Sound Nature School offers a Nature Club for Genesee Hill Elementary now. It was formerly the Wilderness Awareness School running it. Porcupine (Kevin) has taken over and I am his assistant now. We are super excited and today was the first day we picked up the kids after school and had some fun getting to know them and exploring Schmitz Park together.
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand I felt the earth beneath my feet Sat by the river, and it made me complete Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on So tell me when you're gonna let me in I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin I came across a fallen tree I felt the branches of it looking at me Is this the place we used to love? Is this the place that I've been dreaming of? Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on So tell me when you're gonna let me in I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin And if you have a minute, why don't we go Talk about it somewhere only we know? This could be the end of everything So why don't we go Somewhere only we know? Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on So tell me when you're gonna let me in I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin And if you have a minute, why don't we go Talk about it somewhere only we know? This could be the end of everything So why don't we go? So why don't we go? This could be the end of everything So why don't we go Somewhere only we know Somewhere only we know Somewhere only we know?Songwriters: Richard David Hughes / Timothy James Rice-Oxley / Tom Chaplin Somewhere Only We Know lyrics S and I had a nice afternoon stroll at Camp Long. It was pouring all day but sunny for about an hour. We jumped over rocks, saw a duck, a squirrel, lots of dog tracks and some tiny trees jumping in puddles.
Three great High School girls came out to help me plant some Indian Plums, build a fence out of branches and blackberry canes and pull some ivy in Bee Heaven. Sarah and some of her friends came out and helped us move some mulch.
It's funny how different one work party is from the next - in volunteers, tasks, weather and all. When I stepped outside there was so much going on with my bird friends in the trees. I could not spot them but listened in for a while. I didn't even notice when Kevin arrived. When we met at Schmitz Park we talked about a Nature Club for Fairmount Park. Since then I was excited to show Kevin the Park and get him excited, too.
We walked along the path and started our tour on the South end. I showed him the spot where the bee swarm was hanging out last Spring. We went up the hill and I showed him all the dense growth where I haven't figured out the trees. We had to cut our way through the blackberries on the path under the power line. It was obviously quite a long time ago since I went on a walk through the entire 1.3 acre green belt. We visited the Mother of the Forest, went in the little hide out, looked at the signs left on the cherry log and then tried to find out more about some of the mysteries. Bitter cherry for the log. Unsure about the dense growth. We also talked about opportunities, learning and ideas. |
